What is video upscaling and how should I use it?

Video scaling is the process which your DVD player, recorder or amplifier uses to match the video signal from the source to the physical pixel count on a flat screen TV.

For example, a standard DVD video disc has a native resolution of 575 horizontal lines. If your flat screen TV has a native resolution of 1080p lines, the video scaling function will ‘upscale’ the original source from the DVD, resulting in better detail and colour consistency, which in this instance could be 768 lines.
